Location

Calcata is a small town located just 40 kilometers from Rome, situated on a hilltop in the Lazio region of central Italy.


To get there, one can take a train to the nearby town of Viterbo and then take a bus or taxi to Calcata. Alternatively, one can fly into the Rome Fiumicino Airport and then take a train to Viterbo and continue on to Calcata by bus or taxi. It is also possible to drive to Calcata, as it is located just over an hour north of Rome by car.

About the Area

The town has a rich history, dating back to the Etruscan and Roman periods, and it was an important center of the Catholic Church in the Middle Ages. With a reputation as a bohemian and artistic community, artists and intellectuals were drawn to the town's picturesque setting and relaxed atmosphere in the 20th century, and this artistic community continues to thrive today. Interestingly, Calcata is also known for its association with witchcraft and the occult dating back to the the Middle Ages. According to legend, local monks were believed to possess a relic known as the "Holy Foreskin," which was said to be a piece of skin removed from Jesus during his circumcision. This relic was believed to possess miraculous powers and was said to be able to cure ailments and protect against evil. The relic was kept in the Convent of Santa Maria Maddalena for centuries, but its whereabouts are unknown today after being misplaced or stolen in the 1980’s.


For visitors to Calcata, there are a variety of things to do, including exploring the medieval streets and houses, visiting the Castello (castle), attending an art exhibition, visiting the Convent of Santa Maria Maddalena, taking a hike in the surrounding countryside and visiting the Museo Civico.


The weather in Calcata, Italy is typically Mediterranean, with mild winters and warm summers. Average temperatures in the summer can reach into the high 20s or low 30s Celsius (mid to high 80s Fahrenheit), and in the winter, temperatures generally range between 5-15 °C (41-59 °F). The area also gets moderate rainfall throughout the year, with the heaviest precipitation typically occurring in the fall and winter months.
